Congratulations must go to all FOUR teams who played in the Challange Cup semi finals today .. Not a single team deserved to loose but unfortunately for two to progress to the final two more have to be knocked out.
Both semis were extremely close with Rothwell Town and Castleford Town both leading 2-0 at half time. The wind played a major factor in the end since during the second half with the wind in their favour the scores for both matches were level at 2-2 forcing extra time for both games.
During extra time in the first match Farsley Celtic managed to score the winning goal with the only goal of the day to be scored against the wind !
In the second match even extra time couldn’t split the two teams with both Castleford Town and Wortley Juniors each only managing to find the back of the net twice. Penalties almost couldn’t resolve the issue either with both teams having to put forward TEN PLAYERS having long passed the normal 5 each. It was a battle of nerves for all the spectators I can’t imagine what the players were going through when player after player came forward with the keepers saving some and others going wide but it was a Wortley player that finally broke the deadlock with his keeper having saved he needed to score to progress to the final (not for the first time!) and he calmy found the back of the net.
Penalties are such a cruel way to decide a match and every single player on every team who played today can go away with their head held high !!
As a side note I would like to thank Tingley Athletic for allowing the league to use their facilities today. I believe that all 4 teams would agree that the facilities are very good with all the teams and officials having access to the changing rooms – I hope this will be the first of many events which the league is able to host at the Crescent !!
