Farsley Celtic K.O Touchline Manager!

Wednesday, 8th September saw the launch of the FAs new Touchline Manager programme by Farsley Celtic U12s in a match against Ossett Town.

With the Garforth League spearheading the deployment of the new programme ahead of any other youth league in the country, Farsley Celtic manager Terry Morton explained his reasons for getting behind the campaign…”I have worked hard with our parents to get this respect attitude and mostly it has worked, this is just another action that stamps our attitude into the respect campaign.. it cant just be a fad that lasts a few weeks, its something that we need to see through or parents will get disillusioned !”

Initially, we were only looking for one volunteer from each club, but Terry and his team at Farsley have got 3 people to come forward and take on the role, proving they are very serious about it. I spoke with Lisa Ford, one of the new Farsley Celtic Touchline Managers…”You just get tired of hearing people shouting at the kids don’t you, so I thought it was a good opportunity to do something about it.”

Gjfl Touchline Manager with refereeOf course Touchline Manager isn’t just about people watching the game, it needs co-operation from the referees too and Farsley Celtic referee Jack Murgatroyd put his backing behind the campaign by saying “It sounds great – a good idea that can only help…”

In fact the whole evening was a showcase of how to use Respect and Touchline Manager, starting with a clearly defined 4m spectator line giving the players more than enough room to play and keeping spectators a good distance away, plus all managers, coaches and players on the other side of the pitch in their ‘Technical area’. A ‘Respect Handshake’ came next with both teams lining up and completing the handshake as if they were Premiership professionals, completed by the new Touchline Manager walking along the spectator line talking to parents and supporters from both teams.

All-in-all, a great start to the Touchline Manager programme and something for everyone else to work towards.

Touchline Manager is the FAs new initiative to try to combat excessive spectator abuse of players, coaches, referees and other supporters. It is obligatory to all U7 and U8 this year in the GJFL, plus all other 1st Division teams.
